Bone density testing is critical in determining the candidacy of a patient for decompression therapy. Osteoporosis is called a “silent disease” because it offers few symptoms in its progression. One simply can not tell by looking at a patient if he/she has low bone mass or suffers from Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a contraindication to decompression therapy; therefore bone mineral density testing is an important diagnostic test that should be completed prior to putting a patient on any decompression therapy table for treatment of low back pain.

It is a fact that doctors often fail to speak to their patients concerning the risks associated with Osteoporosis or have them tested for the disease. Therefore most of your low back patients will not know to what degree they are at risk for Osteoporosis and will need to be tested.

The HealthStar MetriScan system easily and non-invasively delivers an accurate BMD score and one page color report in about one minute. Once the patient’s score is determined you can order necessary decompression therapy treatments with confidence knowing you will do nothing to exasperate the patient’s health or painful condition. This scan is billable under CPT code 76078 with an average billable amount of $70.00 through Medicare and private insurances.

Osteoporosis is of concern for the average American because of lifestyle and diet deficiencies as well as the effects of an ageing population. It is recommended that Women over 35 years of age and Men over 40 have a base line BMD study with follow up tests completed at regular intervals as recommended for their individual score result.

The HealthStar MetriScan makes it very convenient for your patients to be tested. No longer will they have to wait for weeks to receive a bone density test at the hospital or radiological center. Now in about “one minute” you can get an accurate BMD reading right in your clinic and conveniently save your patient time and money. This also alleviates your risk of losing a decompression therapy candidate while waiting for them to return with their bone density test from another health institution.

Many clinics now include a BMD test in their new patient workup for all new patients as a baseline study unless he/she has had a recent study completed. This act of service is convenient, cost effective, and most appreciated by the patient.

The MetriScan is very favorably priced to save you money and give you a great return. This additional service when presented correctly will be very profitable for your clinic and will enable you to perform your regular services with greater confidence.

The HealthStar MetriScan is a simple, cost effective solution for determining a patient’s Bone Mineral Density (BMD) and their risk for future osteoporotic fractures. By administering the test in your office, you can immediately determine two scores critical to BMD – the T-score and Z-score – and you can discuss the results with your patient immediately. The T-score compares your patient’s test result to the average bone density of a young, healthy person. The Z-score compares the patient’s result to the average bone density of healthy people within their gender, height, weight and age group. Test results are easy to analyze. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established scores of standard deviation by which all bone density systems determine future risk of osteoporotic fractures. The following table shows the score and its corresponding risk factor.

    WHO Score   Risk Factor
  > 0   High Bone Mass
0 to -1.0   Normal Bone Mass
  -1.0 to -2.5   Osteopenia
  -2.5 or <   Osteoporosis
  < -3.0   Severe Osteoporosis

As a physician, you now have a front line diagnostic tool that will help you identify patients who may have low BMD and be at risk for osteoporotic fractures. Using a one minute procedure that scans the patient’s hand, you can assess osteoporotic risk. This is critically important today, as osteoporosis was recently determined to be significantly under diagnosed.
